I got half yo back, Rashard Mendenhall

Everyone knows where they were on September 11. It is, in many ways, this generation's JFK assassination. The shock, devastation, and hopelessness stirred in each of us as we were glued to our television sets all over the nation. I, for one, will never forget the images of people jumping to their deaths from the top floors of the World Trade Centers to avoid being burnt alive. Then, naturally, these feelings of despair gave way to rage and a call for justice against those responsible.

Osama Bin Laden became the face of the attacks. And now, in 2011, nearly a decade after 9/11, Osama Bin Laden is dead.

People's reactions ranged from fans chanting "USA" at a Phillies/Mets baseball game to citizens parading the streets in pure gleeful celebration.

Rashard Mendenhall, the starting running back of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was not so amused. In a Twitter barrage that has ended up costing him his Champion endorsements and countless fans, Rashard voiced:

  • “What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side...”

  • “We’ll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style.”

  • "I believe in God. I believe we're ALL his children. And I believe HE is the ONE and ONLY judge."

  • "For those of you who said you want to see Bin Laden burn... I ask how would God feel about your heart?"
I must admit that I have no idea how to react to the news of Osama's death, but the backlash against Mendenhall is incredible. While he later posted a blog entry to apologize and attempt to clarify his tweets, I don't see how there's anything to apologize for other than his conspiracy-theorist quip about 9/11. While there are many out there, myself included, who don't think we know the whole story of what happened that fateful day in New York City, this was neither the time nor the place to question it, and Mendenhall should have known better.

With that said, I wholeheartedly agree with his statement regarding the celebration of Bin Laden's extermination. Ask anyone who knows me -- I love this great nation to my core -- but the overwhelming hatred and uncontrolled cheer was truly frightening. I think what irks me most is how many times the word "justice" has been thrown around.

A decade ago, President George W. Bush had promised that "we will find these people and we will bring them to justice." Then, this past week, President Obama, during his announcement to the masses concerning the covert Navy SEALs operation, said, "...on nights like this, we can say to those families who have lost loved ones to Al Qaeda's terror, justice has been done."

What is this "justice" we are speaking of, and is it our job to carry it out? And does this justice serve any purpose other than making us feel better? Does Bin Laden's death eradicate all the pain and hurt that he has brought upon so many American families?

Like Rashard Mendenhall, I too believe that only God can judge. All in all, I'm just glad that it wasn't me who had to make the decision to carry out the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden, as I am still struggling through the ethics of the entire situation. Yes, I do understand that he was the leader of Al Qaeda and probably plotting to do more harm to Americans, but, without going into too much of a tangent that would likely lead to discussions of capital punishment, I'll just say that I'm not entirely sure it is man's authority to "bring them to justice."

I will leave you with these follow-up thoughts from Mendenhall: "I wasn't questioning Bin Laden's evil acts. I believe that he will have to face God for what he has done. I was reflecting on our own hypocrisy. During 9/11 we watched in horror as parts of the world celebrated death on our soil. Earlier this week, parts of the world watched us in horror celebrating a man's death."

It's a love game

When Caleb asked me to contribute to this blog, I was confused at why he asked me. I'm not a sports guru, I have nothing you haven't already heard from ESPN, I don't watch MLB/NHL and to top it off, I spent my last year in China -- if you asked me who won last year's World Series, Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, or NBA Finals, I would say "50/50 and phone-a-friend please." But what I hope to offer here are some biased views from a fan of sports. Yes, I said sports and I said fan. "How can you be a fan and not even watch?" ... Perhaps a better title would be a fan of the love of sports. Sports means different things to each of us. No one watches everything but the fact that I don't watch doesn't mean that I don't care about the significance of the Red Sox '03 Championship or cheer for Zenyatta. When sports becomes more than just about a player or a team and it transforms into something greater -- I love that. Some call it "bandwagoning" or being a "poser" like they own the moment because somehow they've "paid their dues" -- I call it a love affair. Some affairs last longer than others and some don't have affairs. It is what it is. That's sports. And that's why I love it.

Fantasy Fantasies - Friday May 6

Cash

Homer Bailey - Another start vs. 'stros next week, cash and stash
Eric Hosmer - Get while the getting is good, nice little lotto ticket for this time of year
Brandon Beachy - still under 50% owned in Yahoo!, a bit mind boggling given his ratios and K rate and well, this kid can pitch
Mark Trumbo - Kendrys is not even close
Mark Melancon - Can't be that much worse than Lyon, can he??

Trash

Aroldis Chapman - Not very many ownable MRs this year, outside of Venters

John Lackey - I can't remember the last time I felt comfortable ever starting him
Denard Span - Not many Twins are worth holding onto
Nyjer Morgan - Broken thumb

Ponies

One of the casual hobbies I've picked up over the last few years is taking a trip to the racetrack. I was trying to figure out why I was drawn to this random pastime normally reserved for senior citizens, and looking back I think it's been a lifelong fascination:

When I was really little, I always loved that carnival horse racing game (the kind where you roll the ball to advance the horse):

(Hmm…I’m not sure why this picture has all old people playing this game too…maybe I really am the only non-senior citizen interested in horse racing).

Any way, then I graduated to Final Furlong, the classic horse racing arcade game that’s actually a pretty good workout:

I would watch the Triple Crown races on TV every year too, but my first real foray into live racing was actually an office outing to the racetrack a few years ago. I have no idea who signed off on the idea for our whole department to take off on a weekday afternoon to go bet on horses, but in any case I was hooked right away.

The excitement of the horses making the final turn with your trifecta bet still in contention is unbeatable (besides actually owning one of these horses coming down the stretch, which I can only dream of for now). Plus, for someone as cheap as me, being able to spread out a couple $20's over a whole day of races is fairly economical (I know, enjoying the race track and being cheap seems like an oxymoron, but somehow it works for me.)

This was probably a way too long explanation of what I think I’ll write about on this blog. Most of the major sports and sports betting stories seem well-covered by my fellow writers, so I think I’ll mostly write about fringe sports, like horse racing – and what a perfect time to get started with the Kentucky Derby this weekend!
I am definitely a beginner when it comes to handicapping – I’ve probably only been to the racetrack 8-10 times in my life, but it’s something I can see myself pursuing for a long time. I think this blog will be a fun opportunity to explore the concepts I learn about handicapping (without actually losing my shirt!).

Any way, with the 2011 Kentucky Derby upon us, hopes for the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 are renewed again. With 20 horses in the field, the field is wide open as usual, but the payouts could be huge. Here are some thoughts on the field:

Definite Potential

3 – Twice the Appeal (20-1): kind of an unknown, but can you really count Calvin Borel out??
7 – Pants on Fire (20-1): love the name, winner over a good field last time out, and it would be cool to see a female jockey win
8 – Dialed In (4-1): favorite, strong owner/jockey/trainer combo and excellent results
13 – Mucho Macho Man (12-1): great name, good post position, pretty good results
15 – Midnight Interlude (10-1): winner last two times out, good post position, but very inexperienced
17 – Soldat (12-1): great results, consistency with jockey/trainer, good value?
19 – Nehro (6-1): one of the favorites, good position to close late?

Eh, Maybe?

1 – Archarcharch (10-1): excellent results this year, but bad luck with the post draw
2 – Brilliant Speed (30-1): jockey switch last time out led to a win, but another bad post draw
4 – Stay Thirsty (20-1): strong jockey/trainer combo, but poor result last time out; I like the name though!
11 – Master of Hounds (30-1): kind of an unknown in America, but proven jockey
14 – Shackleford (12-1): almost won last time out as a major longshot, but pretty inexperienced and a first time Derby jockey
18 – Uncle Mo (9-2): once considered a favorite, but health issues might lead to a scratch?

No Chance (OK, not really…every horse has a chance!)

5 – Decisive Moment (30-1): first time jockey/trainer at the Derby, results are so-so
6 – Comma to the Top (30-1): very experienced horse, but switching to a new jockey for the Derby and hasn’t won in a while
9 – Derby Kitten (30-1): barely snuck into the field, still no jockey??
10 – Twinspired (30-1): marginal results, new jockey for Derby
12 – Santiva (30-1): third jockey switch in the last three races, poor run last time out
16 – Animal Kingdom (30-1): jockey switch, not much experience
20 – Watch Me Go (50-1): biggest longshot, starting way outside

I prefer only betting at the racetrack where I can watch the races in person, but if I were to bet on the Derby I would probably go for some combination of these bets (yep, pretty much all wild guesses):

$2 Win – 3 (Twice the Appeal), 17 (Soldat)
$2 Show – 7 (Pants on Fire), 13 (Mucho Macho Man)
$1 Exacta Box – 3,8,17 (Twice the Appeal, Dialed In, Soldat)
$1 Exacta Box – 7,8,17 (Pants on Fire, Dialed In, Soldat)
$1 Exacta Box – 3,13 (Twice the Appeal, Mucho Macho Man)
$2 Exacta Box – 3,7 (big payout potential!)
$0.10 Superfecta Box – 3,7,8,17 (just for fun)

Total bets: $28.40

The Dirk Show!

Dallas?! O_O Leaving for Austin tomorrow and I have to say I am excited to watch with some Dallas fans. From the feeling I'm getting, they are more shocked than excited and "cautiously optimistic". Ironically, the last team to come back from an 0-2 deficit was Dallas in 2005, which is a sensitive topic around Texas since it was at the expense of the Rockets. The Champs better wake up because they are not going to walk into the finals like the previous two years. Dirk looks unstoppable right now with his fading leg drop kick shot, and Gasol (too slow), Ron Ron (too short), and Lamar (hmm yeah I don't know why he can't guard Dirk, ugly sister), but all I know is that Dirk seems to light up when he sees Lamar...

I think the Lakers only have two options against our German friend: 1) Plan to go for the block from the back side because of how far Dirk leans back for his fade away or 2) Just give up and stop the rest of the Mavs. Magic Johnson was right when he said no one on the Mavs were designed to stop Kobe, but clearly no one on the Lakers were designed to stop Dirk. Dallas could use something to believe in, Rangers came so close, Cowboys looked more like Cowgirls, and the Stars failed to make it to the playoffs (but no one cares about hockey).

I don't think Dallas fans will mind if J.J. Barea has to score the same amount of points as the entire Lakers bench if it means moving on to the next round. Last week, I had a feeling this series might just add to the many let downs in recent Dallas history, but I hope they prove me wrong. If Dirk can get a signature win over a team that 99% of experts would say are stronger and more talented than they are, they can finally put all those bad memories to rest.

Fantasy Fantasies - Thursday May 5

Cinco de Mayo edition! How bad are the brew crew, the south side darkstockings, and new york's other team? Answer: really bad. Jose Reyes rumours abound, current offer is for a bag of baseballs and a suitcase of unmarked bills.

Cash

Ian Stewart - Got called back up, Wiggy's hurt
Nate McLouth - Could he have figured it out? This guy was decent once...
Vicente Padilla - Can't believe I'm writing his name, but there's no one else
Bourgeois - I don't even know this guy's first name, but steals are steals
Ervin Santana - If anyone gave up on this guy, he can turn it around

Trash

Austin Jackson - Tigres are playing very poorly
Brandon Lyon - Longest leash ever, but just a terrible option
Corey Hart - Don't trust him, but watch, he'll turn it around and prove me wrong
Chris Narveson - I mean, seriously, this guy is a spot start at best
Any Cards closer - Tony LaRussa hates you

Random Thought...

Random thought I had while watching the Thunder-Grizzlies game last night:

Noticed that TNT likes to put titles under their player introductions, like Russell Westbrook - PG, "Ignitor"

This got me thinking about what some other players' titles would be:

Kobe - Assassin
Dwight Howard - Guardian
Ray Allen - Sniper
Ron Artest - Headcase
Eddy Curry - Expiring Contract (also fat)
Lamar Odom - Reality TV Supporting Character
Kevin Love - White All Star
Bill Walker - Liability
Sasha Vujacic - Overachiever (serious... how is this guy engaged to Sharapova?)
Jeremy Lin - Asian Pride
Kevin Garnett - Asshole

Thoughts?

On another note... I wish Arenas was still good so we could give him the nickname "Gunshop" oh well

Fantasy Fantasies - Wednesday May 4

Hats off to you patient Fantasy owners who held onto Mr. Liriano, there's something to be said for not dropping a guy you were high on. Not the cleanest performance by any stretch of the imagination, but a no-no is a no-no. For those of you who moved on Wallace and Izturis, you can thank me later and the Zach Attack returns tonight! Today's Cash and Trash

Cash

Mike Aviles - if he's still available
Francisco Liriano - ship has probably sailed, but take a flier if he's out there on your wire and if he does well in his next start, SELL
Eduardo Sanchez - Once again, TLR hates Fantasy, but if you need saves
Scott Sizemore - sure, why not, he was highly rated at one point in his career
Matt LaPorta - maybe the Indians are legit, or just hot right now

Trash

R.A. Dickey - not sure why anyone would have him, but just really inconsistent
Brennan Boesch - Who?
Johnny Gomes - You had your chance to sell high, now it's waiver wire fodder
Nick Hundley - Don't want to own any Padres
Carlos Gomez - His OBP is just awful and if he can't get on base, he has no value

Help Me, Help You

We all remember that memorable scene in Jerry Maguire. No, not that one, you hopeless romantics -- I'm not talking about anyone having anyone at "hello."

I'm talking about the bathroom scene, where Jerry is pleading with Rod Tidwell, "HELP ME, HELP YOU." And of course, he follows up this classic line with a Tom Cruise-worthy breakdown, kicking the wall and breaking his toe (true story).
But that is what this page is all about. Help me, help you. I love sports betting for two reasons:
1) it makes seemingly meaningless, boring games suddenly significant and intriguing; and
2) it affirms the fact that my wealth of sports knowledge is not a complete waste of brain space.

All of this is not to say that I am a complete expert when it comes to sports betting. My only credential for this job position is my BetUS account, which I've been able to increase from a $75 beginning balance near the end of football season to $300+ through $5 weekly bets. I would classify myself as a casual sports bettor -- I'll bet a small amount of coin on a consistent basis, but you won't see me risking my life savings betting on a Rockets championship. However, I guarantee that I have a vested interest in each pick that I post onto the Side Bet Sidebar, so you know I'm not just picking blindly either.

Anyway, I'll have a running tally of how my picks do, starting today, and hopefully these picks will add a new, riveting element to your sports world and make you a decent amount of change on the side. Good luck!

Fantasy Fantasies - Tuesday May 3

Tony LaRussa must hate Fantasy Baseball or he punts saves. There was a Rios sighting last night, and if you allow Tom Gor$zelu7nskiy of the Washington Nationals to shut you out for 8 innings, you know you are a terrible hitting team...onto today's Cash and Trash

Cash

Maicer Izturis - Lots of 3B injuries around the league, multiple position eligibility, could do worse
Brett Wallace - Not a 'stros fan, but I like his potential, and of course, two first names, sorta...
Garrett Jones - I always confuse him with Ryan Doumit, but cheap speed and power potential if he keeps the K rate down
Matt Joyce - Cleaning up for the Raysters right now, two first names, although one is girly.
Alex Avila - Catcher is a rotational spot for most fantasy teams, make a move.

Trash

Darren Oliver - Feliz isn't back yet, but put this old dog to rest
Raul Ibanez - Not any better than the two OFs I mentioned above
Adam LaRoche - A lot of guy available that will give you less heartache
Matt Thornton/Chris Sale - Only Santos aka "Latino Broxton" should be owned right now
Kyle Drabek - If you aren't in a keeper league, this kid is currently unstartable

First 2nd Round Thoughts on NBA Playoffs

Last night completed the round of game 1s for the elite 8 of the NBA, with 3 of the 4 road teams coming out ahead. Only the Heat, who seemed to be picked by many 'perts to lose, held home court.

Miami was more emotionally ready for this match up and showed that they are by far more athletic than the aging hall of famers from Boston. Yet, I think the fact that Boston seem to still hang around even with Pierce being ejected, KG moving around like a zombie, and Rondo almost having more turnovers than assists, bodes well for the rest of this series. Also, can Miami keep their emotional high for a long series or will Lebron fade like he did against Boston a year ago? Boston can't let Jones beat them over and over again, who became the new third of the big three. Miami absolutely would have been better off with Boozer or Amare, which would have given them a true post threat.

Memphis?!? I will be the first to say that I love Durant, as a UTexas alumni, it's a given, yet in game one it was ZBo and the rest of the Grizzlies who proved to be the better team. Between the younger Gasol and ZBo, they had 54 points and 23 rebounds and dominated inside the paint, which makes me wonder would this even be a series if the Thunder didn't make the trade for Perkins? I really think the Thunder will bounce back, Kevin Durant is too good not to at least get a couple wins on his own. But the rest of the team needs to step up and that starts with the four bigs. As a Knick fan, its hard to see Zach Randolph dominate on the playoff level after we gave up on him for pennies on the dollar... maybe its ok that ZBo isn't the smartest player. Will he jack up a 40 footer with 8 seconds remaining? Will he try to go 1 on 3 when you send him a pass? All the mental lapses can be forgiven if he carries this Memphis team to the next round on his big back.

I will be the first to admit that I never felt that Joe Johnson was a winner. Actually I will go as far as saying that Joe Johnson is a quitter. I thought Atlanta would never get past the second round as long as their top paid player was Joe. Well I guess he made me eat my words last night. Joe Johnson showed up, dropping 34 and going 5 for 5 from long distance in a high pressure game. Chicago clearly isn't as dominate as many thought from the regular season. I was never a huge fan and always felt like they had to work so much harder than many of the other teams and could have easily lost a few of those close games to the Pacers. This series will truly be a dog fight, even with ex-bull Kirk Hinrich sitting out. Jeff Teague stepped up, holding Rose to only 11-27 shooting, and committing 2 fouls against one of the most prolific drivers in the game. Rose will need to play at a very high level for the Bulls to win this series, which means the fate of their playoffs might all be leaning on that one sore ankle.

Dallas Dallas Dallas... I happened to live with 2 guys from Dallas from 2007-2010. I have seen their suffering and pain first hand. Golden State still brings them chills, along with the lost to Denver and the awful series against the in-state rival Spurs. Many people have chosen to call the Dallas Mavericks "mentally soft", and when they ended the half giving away 4 free points, I thought to myself, here we go again. But Dirk stayed tough and Chandler proved to be the piece the Mavs have been lacking for the past decade. There was nothing soft about Dirk's 28 points and 14 rebounds, and Dallas presents the same problems Oklahoma did last year to the Champs. The Lakers do not deal well with a stretch four. Gasol and Bynum are not comfortable being so far from the basket since it takes away their twin towers' ability to use their length in paint defense. Oddly enough, the one successful Western Conference team the Lakers never had to beat to win their past 6 titles might be the one best designed to beat them. Yes Kobe, that statement surprises me too... Kobe better do his best Jordan impersonation because he might have to drop 40 points a night to keep their three-peat dreams alive.

These playoffs have lived up to the hype, and every potential Finals match-up seems to be an attractive one except Atlanta versus Memphis. I'm sure ABC would love that... But lets not get too ahead of ourselves yet, there's plenty of ball to be played.

And did old man Kidd really have 11 dimes last night?! I love the NBA playoffs. Looking forward to the rest of round two!

Fantasy Fantasies - Monday May 2

Fernando Salas
Only the truly dedicated Fantasy players (owners, GMs, overlords? Whatever you prefer) dream about Fantasy. When you dream that Fernando Salas got you a save in your H2H league, you might need to reconsider your career choice. Each day, I will have my Cash & Trash picks, highlighting 5 guys that I think you should move on if they are available and 5 guys that you might consider for the recycle bin.

Weekly, I will highlight buy low, sell high candidates because to quote Louis Winthorpe III in one of my favorite 80's movies, Trading Places:

"Think big, think positive, never show any sign of weakness. Always go for the throat. Buy low, sell high. Fear? That's the other guy's problem. Nothing you have ever experienced will prepare you for the absolute carnage you are about to witness. Super Bowl, World Series - they don't know what pressure is. In this building, it's either kill or be killed. You make no friends in the pits and you take no prisoners. One minute you're up half a million in soybeans and the next, boom, your kids don't go to college and they've repossessed your Bentley. Are you with me?"

And as time permits, I will do some in-depth story or analysis on something Fantasy related. By no means am I am 'pert, but I probably spend an unhealthy amount of time and energy on Fantasy Baseball, leading to plenty of rage and fury from the missus. Without further ado, here are today's Cash & Trash

Cash -

Bud Norris - Norris only needs 2 strikes to get a K, move quickly before he hurts you
Todd Helton - Partying like it's 1999
Darwin Barney - Got to love a kid with two first names
Fernando Salas - Inside lane to close, who knows with LaRussa, speculate
Johnny Damon - 2nd Coming?? Fitting in well in the 2 spot for the Raysters

Trash -

Matt Harrison - Can't pitch in Arlington, #notagoodlook
Alcides Escobar - No steals, no want
Ryan Franklin - Fell off the tree and hit every branch on the way down
Aubrey Huff - He's still in the league?
Vernon Wells - You know it's bad when a team wishes they had Juan Rivera back

Buy Low - If someone's sellin', I'm buyin' -

Carl Crawford - Sox will find a way, too good to continue down this path
Dan Uggla - Power is there, buy
Ubaldo Jimenez - Team is too good, talent is there
Carlos Pena - He'll hurt the average, but if you need power, you need power
Kelly Johnson - Arizona is ugly, but not this ugly
Dan Hudson - I think the K's will come, 'zona is better that this, really!
Jetes - If you can get him cheap, he's still leading off for the Empire
Gallardo - Pitching like a Pinto, but get in when he's still on the junk pile
Brett Gardner - Bottom floor, he'll turn it around
Adan Dunn - Slow starter, make a deal

Sell High - If someone's interested, deal 'em -

Berkman - Love the guy, great lineup, but mama always said sell high
Francouer - Ungodly hit rate, 100% owned in ESPN??
Russ Martin - Really high HR/FB %, find a NYY homer and exit
Britton - Will come back to Earth, he plays for the O's!
Sizemore - Someone in your league must have a man crush, exploit mercilessly
Colon - Humpty will have a great fall
Lohse - Who is this guy...
Wolf - And this guy...
Masterson - Are the Indians a legitimate team? Too scary
Zobrist - On the fence about him, if someone's willing to pay for last week's production, do it
