Party Foul: Golden State Warriors Fans

We all know that one guy at the party. He underestimates the amount of fizz while pouring himself a drink, and it overflows onto the kitchen counter. He triple-dips his chips into the community guacamole. He makes dramatic hand gestures with a cup in his hand, and liquid splatters all over the hallway. He argues and starts a fight with another guest. He clogs the toilet. He drinks too much and vomits on the living room carpet. He knocks over a vase while exiting the house.

If you don’t know that one guy I’m talking about, then you are that guy. (But it’s okay because there are no outcasts here at Gym Class All Stars.)

Party fouls happen in the world of sports as well, and athletes, coaches, management, media, and fans need to be called out and held accountable for their actions. So that is the purpose of this column -- to objectively whistle the violation, concisely describe the explanation, and justly decide the penalty.

Violation: Golden State Warriors fans serenade team owner Joe Lacob with a chorus of boos.

Explanation: Timing is everything, and unfortunately for Golden State fans, booing Lacob during beloved Chris Mullin’s jersey retirement ceremony ranks right up there with “laughing during a funeral” in terms of poor timing. It was classless, pure and simple. And if they were booing because of the Monta Ellis trade, the entire stadium should be at the doctor’s office getting their heads checked. If Andrew Bogut is able to stay healthy, he instantly becomes a top-3 center in the west, and here’s a reality check: Monta will never win a ring. Oh, and of course there’s the return of Captain Jack to the Bay area! Forget the terrible timing -- why were they booing in the first place?

Penalty: You’d think an 18-25 record and another year missing the playoffs would be punishment enough, but things look to get a whole lot worse before they get better. However, misery loves company, and Warriors fans will soon be joined by their fellow 49ers fans after their team overpays for Alex Smith. Unlike yesterday night’s travesty, those boos would be legitimate.

A lot of my friends out there were upset about what occurred. I find it pretty funny how this is the biggest news coming out of GS since they beat the Mavericks in 07. I also find it funny that a lineup of Baron, Monta, SJax, Harrington, Biedrins today is still better than what they have currently.

I was always under the impression that the fans hated Monta Ellis. Did I give them too much credit?

The majority of the fans did not specifically hate Monta -- they hated the undersized back court because they realize it was a fundamental flaw. So this trade should have remedied that complaint since Bogut is a quality big man *when healthy*. However, what I've been told is that the fans don't approve because they feel Monta could have fetched them more value in return. Couple that with the fact that they are already tanking with half the season left (the management isn't hiding this either)...you get the angry mob.
